The Houston area is subject to a variety of severe weather, so it is not surprising if a wave of hail storms moves through the area. However, after the storms pass, you need to inspect your home to ensure that the hail did not damage your roof. Here are several signs that you have hail damage on your roof.
The most obvious sign is where you can see several areas of random damage without any pattern. Hail hits sporadically, which means that it is not likely going to be any pattern of decay or damage.
Second, if the damage is from hail, there are probably multiple black smudge marks on your roof. Hail hits frequently look like circular round black dots spread throughout your roof shingles, similar to a contagion.
Third, small hail may leave dents or pits in shingles. It can also knock the protective granular coating off shingles. If it does, you will find granules near gutter system downspouts or on the ground, especially along the roof’s dripline.
Finally, larger hail can crack shingles or break off parts of shingles such as corners. Large hailstones can even punch holes in shingles, sometimes leaving the roof felt visible.
If you can see hail damage, your roof is compromised, and you need to call a roofing contractor for help.
